Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
