In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to significant casualties.
"Agreement must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.
Broader Political Discussions Underway
In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the uprising.
Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
